Week 7 summary

 Prez-paredes et al. (2012)

This study examined students’ actual interaction with corpus-based resources while completing different focus-on-form activities .Students are divided into two; the control group and experimental group. Tasks for both groups are designed the same, however only the experimental group can assess to explicit information and guidelines on the use of the British National Corpus wed interface. The result shows that the two groups of learners behaved in a different way.  CG used online resources to a lesser extent than EG and EG learners diversified and used more resources simultaneously than CG individuals. The researchers suggest that they need to explore more different types of learner’s approaches to corpus use based on learners’ belief and direct observation methodologies.

Reinhardt( 2010)

According to Reinhardt(2010), corpus linguistic methods have not had major impact on L2 teaching except for a few areas such as L2 for specialized purpose. Even though the importance of using corpus techniques in L2 classroom has been raised by early debates and the experiences of early adopters, it is still held until today. However Corpus still continues to influence SLA researchers and pedagogical innovator. As technology has been developing more, the l2 learning also becomes technology- mediate so both learners and teachers may find that corpora and corpus-informed learning resources are increasingly more accessible, diverse, and adaptable.

Comparison and contrast

Both studies investigated the use of corpus linguistic methods and very difficult for me to understand what they say clearly. Prez-paredes et al. (2012)’s article examined students behaviors when using corpus-based resources and analyzed students interaction based on data. On the other hand, Reinhardt( 2010)’s article discussed the pedagogical application of corpus-based theory and methodologies and possible reasons why current L2 teaching practices don’t reflect the knowledge of corpus linguistics. I think both articles try to explain why corpus-based method are important as showing data of the real study and discussing potential of corpus.. Actually, I just realized that corpus might be helpful when I prepare for the presentation about concordaning. However I still need time to fully understand how they are used for L2 teaching.

Clarification questions: What does ‘armchair linguistic’ mean on Reinhardt’s article?

Application questions: According to my experience, using concordancing is quite difficult even for me. Is there any resource regarding corpus-based method for lower level students such as elementary students?
